A report called, Wage Theft in Australia has revealed that immigrants in Australia receive the worst amount in wages. These workers are subjected to the worst working conditions, and most are suffering this unpleasant treatment in silence.
According to the report, about half of migrant workers in Australia are paid wages that are about half the minimum wage in the country at $12 per hour.
The report, which was co-authored by Laurie Berg and BassinaFarbenblum, revealed that the workers who were mostly subjected to these terrible working conditions were those who did jobs that required a lot of manual labor such as farm work, vegetable, and fruit-picking.
About 15% of these workers are paid $5 an hour or even less. Another 31% of these workers which constitutes about a third of the total number earn about $10 or less every hour.
The report was based on responses taken from more than 4,000 migrants who are from 107 countries. The migrants who took the survey were only those who were working in Australia and had a temporary visa.
The report highlighted that only 3 out of every 100 of these underpaid migrant workers went to the fair work ombudsman. But the entire effort was in vain as most of them got nothing back.
Who will report these employers?
Reporting wage theft is not easy, as many barriers stand in the way of these workers. Their corrupt employers have threatened many of them and as such, fear of losing their visa.
The report, however, made recommendations on how to put an end to all cases of exploitation in the workplace. It recommends that making improvements on immigration safeguards and support services would motivate more of these underpaid workers to report their employers and get the justice they deserve.
Wage Theft in Australia further revealed that Australia has a full number of underpaid workers and that the amount of exploited wages is possibly more than a billion dollars.
