Canada’s Visa Sponsorship Form Tagged “Discriminatory”

Hundreds of immigrants in Canada are expressing their disappointment and frustration over an online visa application form with which they could sponsor either their parents or grandparents to migrate to Canada.

The form which was available on the first-come-first-served basis was branded “discriminatory” by unhappy applicants as it was available online for less than 10 minutes.

Immigrants Angry Over Canada's Discriminatory Visa Sponsorship Program

The essence of this family-sponsorship visa scheme was to give a good number of the 100,000 immigrants in Canada competing for the visa, an opportunity to sponsor their parents’ or grandparents’ immigration to Canada.

About three years after the lottery system was scrapped in 2016, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made an announcement earlier this month, informing the public of its intention to create an “interest to sponsor” form and make it available online for immigrants to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada. The form was to be available online Monday by 12:00 EST.

Intending applicants were informed that the form which had several pages, should take about 10 minutes to complete. All applicants were required to upload their proof of immigration status along with their application.

To their dismay, some applicants tried submitting their forms at about 12:05 EST only to see a message on their screens saying that the process had closed.

Immigration lawyers think the system was unfair to a lot of people

Immigration lawyers are of the opinion that the system did not give everyone a fair chance. They think consideration was not given to people who may have a power or communication outage in their area or even people with disabilities. Some other affected applicants think the system was poorly designed.

By the afternoon of Monday, over 1,000 people had put in their signatures on an online petition asking for a redo of the 2019 process.
